We spent the whole week learning about Diwali - The festival of light.

We made Diva or Diya pots using clay and tools.

We painted some indian dancing ladies and did some indian dancing ourselves.

We watched examples of how people celebrate Diwali and listened to stories about it.

In choosing time there were lots of activities for us to do. Making Rangoli patterns, making Mendhi hand patterns, and cards.

The Discover Centre

We went on a trip to the Discover Centre in Stratford. We left early in the morning and travelled by coach...

... We met Hootah the baby alien who's planet was dieing because it had run out of stories!!

We did some good exploring and found lots of story ideas. Here is a short clip of all the things we did.

When we had made up our stories we sent them up into space and then it was time to go home.

We read the story of Mr Gumpy's outing and then tested foil boats to see if they float better with a flat or curved bottom.

Feast of Stories

This week we began our ‘Feast of Stories’ project. We have been lucky enough to become involved in this exciting project with four other Redbridge schools.

‘This project explores the cultural heritage of the children in the school and their families. Children working on this project will become story ambassadors and will collect stories from around the school. This theme is largely based on personal experience and will develop as the project goes on depending on the nature of the experiences of the school.’

There will be a large fabric tree which will be attached to the classroom wall. Each child will have their own branch dedicated to their investigation into the story of their own heritage, through story sharing, song, discussing food, families, friends and places. The children have already created self-portraits to attach to their branch, explored story ideas through drama and small groups, and recorded their stories.

I’m sure the project will inspire the children to become great storytellers. Watch this space as the project continues…

We have been celebrating the Chinese new year.

After reading the story of how the Chinese new year came to be named after different animals, we spent the whole week gaining new skills and experiences that linked in with this celebration.

We made kites, blossom trees and chinese lanterns...

... we used role play masks to recreate the race of the animals and we cooked up and tasted a traditional chinese dish.

For our NSPCC Dance-athon we danced to a beautiful piece of music and used streamers to move to the beat.

Something has been growing in our classroom over by the reading area... It's a beanstalk!!

We are learning all about Traditional stories and rhymes this term. Last week Jack's beanstalk, the castle and the Giant all appeared in our classroom. We got very messy printing to make our different size leaves, the castle and the giant's boots. We have had lots of fun dressing up, using props and learning some familiar phrases.

Well done for performing such a fantastic nativity!!! You all look amazing in your costumes and you are singing beautifully. Thank you for working so hard.

We will be having a Reception Christmas Party on Thursday, 16th December. We would really appreciate any donations of food and drink for the children to share. We ask that you do not bring in any meat items, fizzy drinks, nuts or bananas due to allergies etc. If you would like to contribute, please could you bring these in on the morning of the party.
We will be having the party in the afternoon, so children must bring a lunch or have a school meal as normal.

We came up with a fair way of deciding what to call them.

The Skeleton Dance

This week we learned all about bonfire night. We looked at different types of fireworks and thought about what noises they would make. This helped us to make our own firework pictures to be put on display. Can you remember how you made them? Over the last few weeks we have been extremely busy.

We have learned the letter names and sounds for s,a,t,p,i,n,m and d. We have practised identifying these sounds in words and objects by playing games, watching film clips and sorting them.

We have also put a lot effort into practising and writing these letters and sounds in our homework, so well done!

Everyone has tried really hard to learn and share with their friends through lots of independent and creative activities.

We learned about harvest time and autumn. All the hard work we put into sticking leaves and twigs on our tree has made a beautiful display!

Well done to Kitty, Demi and Marshall for making your scarecrows. They were fantastic!

Football Crazy, Football Mad!

I know we are all disappointed about England's performance in the World Cup but I am pleased to say that the RT "Denmark" team won their match against the USA in our very own John Bramston World Cup.

The game was very close and both teams played extremely well in very hot weather. The final score was 1:0 to Denmark.

We all enjoyed learning about Denmark and thank you to everyone who put in so much effort with their homework. In class we made some Danish pastries and learnt a Danish dance. At story time we read books by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.

Our Trip to London Zoo

Our trip to London Zoo was very successful. Our day began with a ride on a double decker bus to the zoo. RT were very excited to be sitting on the top-deck and sang enthusiastically (and very loudly)!!!

When we arrived we went straight to the lunch room and tucked into our sandwiches. Then we went and met one of the Zoo Keepers who told us a story about Abi the lioness. The children were so well behaved - I was very proud.

We then had some time to look around the zoo and of course to visit the shop.

After a long and busy day, needless to say the journey home was much quieter!!

The sun has started to shine again and we have been enjoying our garden area. We have been using large cardboard boxes for role play opportunities. So far the boxes have been houses, boats, planes and trains - I wonder what else the boxes will become over the next few weeks...

Just before the Spring break we planted some beans and potatoes, we are looking forward to trying some of our home grown vegetables. We are also looking forward to planting some flowers in our garden over the next few weeks.

It seems like such a long time ago now but here is a picture of all of our fantastic Spring bonnets. Thank you all for the obvious time and effort that went into making such wonderful creations!

Our topic this term is 'Animals and their habitats' - our trip to London Zoo being the highlight. We have been busy making animal masks and learning about different wild animals. Watch this space for pictures of our animal work...

Fruit Tasting

A very Happy New Year to everyone!

Firstly well done to all children who struggled through the snow last Wednesday and Friday to make it to school. We did have lots of fun making a snowman in our garden.

Just to let you know that our PE day has changed. It is now on a Thursday, please remember to return your child's PE kit (and check if their plimsolls still fit them!)

Also a reminder about packed lunches. Please remember not to put any nuts or nut products in your child's packed lunch. We do have some children in reception who have nut allergies and just touching something that has been in contact with nuts can cause a severe allergic reaction. Thank you for your understanding.

A Busy Few Weeks!

Wow, we have been really busy the past few weeks. Just look at some of our work...

We made poppies for Remembrance Day.

We made sparklers for Fireworks Day and spoke in class about how to stay safe when using sparklers.

This week is anti-bullying week and the children were all given a blue wristband at the beginning of the week to wear. We made a circle of blue hands for our classroom door to show that we are all friends and we have spoken lots about what we would do or who we would speak to if we were feeling sad. We have even played with blue playdough this week!

Lastly a BIG thank you to all the children who have taken Harriet the bear home with them this term. She has had some amazing adventures and we have all really enjoyed reading her diary (she even has a new outfit this week!!!). Please don't worry if she hasn't yet visited your house, everyone will get a turn.

Fun in the Garden!

We have played parachute games with Mrs Fresco's class and had lots of fun playing on the slide, riding the bikes with our friends and practicing balancing on stilts and stepping stones.

Hello children! We have all had a wonderful week back. It is the Summer term and we are busy learning about growing things.We have had fun making flags for St. George's Day..... and we loved playing with dragons and castles. We wrote this Spring song. We hope that you like it. Also, we want to invite you to our Class Play at Assembly time on the Tuesday after Bank Holiday,5th May. We hope that you can all come and see our work. 23-27March. Welcome back after Half-Term Holiday.

Welcome back Children. We had lots to write about and to talk about from your hoiiday. I hope that you all had a good rest. I missed you all. We have had fun with our Text for the week, John Burningham's 'Shopping Basket'. We acted out the story and sequenced the events of the story and had many discussions about it.
Our Home Corner has been turned into a Pet Shop, which has been great fun. Instead of purchasing food from a shop (like in 'The Shopping Basket'), we have been making shopping lists for the pet shop and using real money to buy pets (soft toys). We have learned to look at a price list to pay the proper amount for our pets and their supplies. The children have taken turns as the Pet Shop Keeper and as the shopper. They all are learning to count out the correct amount of pennies (and some pupils, 2p).
We learning about what animals make good pets, caring for pets and what they need in order to stay healthy. We linked this with what we need to keep us healthy and alive. We were excited to have Albert's pet dog, Angel, visit our classroom. Mrs. James talked to us about caring for Angel and we all got a chance to stroke Angel Dog if we wanted to. Thank you Mrs. James for taking the time to visit us with your well-behaved and beautiful pet.
Tuesday was Pancake Day. We learned a song and a poem about pancake day and why it is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday. Tuesday morning in PE we had a 'pancake warm up', pretending that we were the ingredients in the batter. That is how we learned what is in a pancake. We had pancake races in the hall, which were great fun and very noisy with all of the laughter and cheering. The children loved the part where they had to flip the pancake and catch it in the frying pan. They got quite good at learning what a relay race entails and also at passing on the frying pan.
Tuesday afternoon we learned where all of the ingredients for pancakes come from. [Eg 1.The flour comes from wheat. We looked at stalks of wheat growing. We learned about planting, growing, harvesting and milling of the wheat to make flour. 2.The milk comes from the cow. 3. The butter comes from the milk. 4.The eggs come from a hen. 5. The jam comes from strawberries.] We read out a recipe and followed it to make pancakes. We all took part and we all noted the changes as the ingredients were added, mixed and cooked. We used our sences to find ourt what was happening... touch, sight, smell,and taste. We could hear the sloppy batter being mixed. Some children helped Mrs. Peters fry the pancakes. Mrs. Peters is very good at flipping pancakes and none were wasted!
Then we all had a pancake party. We all chose our favourite toppings and tasted them. Some children liked them so much that they had seconds and thirds! Two children did not like them. We recorded our comments, likes and dislikes about pancakes and discussed the data. We made pancake charts! All in all, it was a lovely day. Did you have pancakes at home?

Books, Books, Books and a storyteller! 2-6 March

This has been a very busy week in Reception and in the School, celebrating the joy of reading and of hearing stories. Books are magical and we are so fortunate to have them. Monday was the last day of the School Book Fair that many of us have enjoyed visiting. We are fortunate to have lovely books to buy, right in our own school, with some of the profit going to our school.
On Tuesday, the children from Reception, Y1 and Y2 classes had an assembly on the enjoyment of books. I was able to share one of my Favourite American stories, which the children helped to act out. 'The Little Engine That Could', celebrates helpfulness and the ability to keep trying until the job is done. The children loved the train whistle!
We all participated in World Book Day on Thursday and were proud to be part of a World Wide interest in books. All of the pupils went home with a voucher to buy their own book. Many of us dressed up as our favourite story character and told each other why we liked the story. The children had a wonderful time with role play throughout the day, especially in our garden and the playground. I was dressed as 'The Tiger Who Came for Tea' and was able to share that charming story with the children. Thank you parents for supporting World Book Day by providing costumes for the children. I hope that your child is enjoying his/ her free book.
Thursday morning was our slot to go into the Hall and meet Tony, the professional story teller. He told us an amazing story about a prince and a princess, using some of the RS children in their costumes to help illustrate the story (as story props). The children sat well throughout the session and talked about the story afterwards. We make up our own stories in our classroom and can retell them.
All week we have been enjoying reading the Elmer, The Patchwork Elephant stories and doing a multitude of Elmer-related activities. Friday was Elmer's Day for the Foundation Stage and we all had parties. We loved seeing the Nursery children parade through our classroom in their costumes (especially Emily's and Lorenzo's little brothers). We had parachute games in the playground, followed by a fantastic feast of party food in the classroom. We wore our lovely Elmer hats that we had made. Lastly, we had an elephant march in the garden, followed by games. Thank you parents for donating food and for helping with the party.
Busy week....and I haven't even told you about our fantastic new Computer programme, Math's Whizz. bye for now,

13.3.09 'Do Something Funny for Money'

We had a Wonderful week at School. RS has been very fortunate to have friendly parents who fit in the time to help in the classroom. The childen all enjoy this and benefit from having the support of another caring adult. Parent helpers are always welcome and can come in to our classroom when they have had appropriate checks. Please let me know if you are interested to become a classroom helper.
Over the past few weeks we have had Paris' Mum in to read us a story in Spanish, Goda's Mum in to read a story in Lithuanian, and Lorenzo's Mum in to read a story in Italian. Thank you for the lively reading sessions, where we could celebrate the diversity of languages in RS. We hope to have more of you join us. We also thank the Father and friends who helped, by taking care of siblings during the story sessions.
Red Nose Day furnished us with an opportunity to have a lot of fun talking about our pajamas and being funny. We all enjoyed wearing pajamas. Some children had fun being 'twins' for a school day...same pajamas. We also had a chance to talk about others who are less fortunate and how our money might be used to help them. We were pleased to be part of a country-wide effort.

We had a lovely week looking at signs of Spring. We made daffodil cards and composed this poem for our Mums and an Auntie. We also took home a lovely Spring flower as a little surprise. We have been enjoying our 'Transport' topic and recited and mimed a poem about a bus trip in Friday assembly. On Wednesday we heard the Redbridge Brass band do a recital in our hall. We learned about the voices of each instrument. We followed this up in the ICT suite on Thursday, listening to instruments with headphones attached to our computers. We all enjoyed getting ready for Parent's evening. We are proud of the things we have learned and we all wanted to show you our books and our classroom. Well done to Tomiwa ansd Sharon for getting the first two 'Excellent Learner' certificates. Bravo to all of children in RS. I am so proud of all of you. Week Beginning 12.1.09

We have had a terrific time this week learning Nursery Rhymes. Our favourite rhyme has been 'Humpty Dumpty', which we can sing enthusiastically. We have made lovely Humpty Dumpties from fabric and card. We have mimed and said the rhyme and have loved reading a story, 'Little Lumpty,'based on the rhyme. We have learned to make interlocking walls for Humpty Dumpty to sit on from wooden bricks, and from plastic Lego and Doplo. We have investigated what happens to an uncooked egg when it is dropped off the walls that we have constructed. S P L A T !!! The children loved that! We have also written our own version of the Nursery Rhyme for you to enjoy. We hope that you like it!

We were also busy this week learning the names and properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes. We love to eat in Reception, so we ate spheres, cubes, cuboids and enjoyed identifying the shapes of the food in our lunch boxes and at school dinners. What shapes do you eat during your meals? We also identified the shapes that we used in our construction kits.

Week beginning 19. 1. 09 Big Schools' Bird Watch

Hello Everyone! We have had an exciting week, being part of the Nation's Big Schools' Bird Watch, 2009. We used the informative R.S.P.B. website to learn about the most common garden birds in this area. We listened to their songs and calls, as well as learning a bit about their habits. We looked at the R. S. P. B. magazines and posters to identify some birds. On Tuesday afternoon we took a walk in our J.B. School grounds to make a survey of the birds that we could spot at one time. (You cannot keep adding on to a count in case you count the same bird twice. You can only count the birds that have landed.)It is very hard to identify some birds. We counted 90 birds altogether, as well as seeing many more overhead. The greatest number of birds of one species seen at one time was 40 Black Headed Gulls. Our favourite bird is the Robin but sadly, our class did not see any on Tuesday. All of us were able to log on and to enter our survey data onto a block graph in the ICT Suite. We used the programme 'Too Simple, to Count' and had great fun doing this. We learned 'The Dickey Bird' rhyme and made dickey birds from card and lolly sticks. We decided that 'Dickey Birds' were robins and blue tits. We coloured these to look like real birds and added feathers. We used our birds when we recited the rhyme. Every day now we look for birds to identify and listen for their song. We all have enjoyed learning about birds and we want to help take care of them.
This has also been 'Gingerbread Man Week' because we have learned the traditional story with its catchy rhyme, 'Run! Run! as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread man. We read many renditions of the story, sequenced the events and made a plan to show the Gingerbread Man's route. We also followed a recipe to make Gingerbread biscuits and gobbled them all up like the FOX. We're sorry that we didn't make enough to share with you.(Speaking of foxes: we have been following their footprints in the frost in our Reception garden. Some children are becoming good trackers!) We have used the parachute this week to retell 'The Gingerbread Man' story in Drama.
Jordan joined us this week. Welcome, we're glad that you are here. You have loved exploring our outdoor area. We have been learning about volume and capacity and many children have come away with damp sleeves. We are lucky to have a radiator outside our classroom to dry off jumpers quickly. We had a busy, happy week.

Week of 26 January, Theme: Chinese New Year

We had a wonderful week learning about China and the Celebration of Chinese New Year. We started our days with a Chinese New Year Greeting and looked at Chinese writing in two Chinese Text Books. We think that Chinese People are very clever to learn how to write the complex characters. We heard the story of the New Year animal race and discovered why 2009 is the year of the OX. We played with 12 soft toys, representing the animals, and put them in order from first to twelfth! We thought of a movement for each animal and joined them up for a vigorous PE lesson. We listened to Chinese music and did dragon dances. We made 27 dragons from card and lolly sticks, played with them and counted them. We have worked as a whole class to learn about rhyme and we created our own class poem. We recited this at the Friday Sharing assembly. We hope that you like it.

Because it is Chinese New Year.

We enjoyed looking at Chinese lanterns and we each made one on Tuesday to dress up our classroom. We looked at Chinese New Year Cards and decorated a card to take home on Friday. We heard Chinese stories and loved the story about the Monster that eats people at Chinese New Year. Luckily, he is afraid of the colour red and loud sounds....hence the presence of loud drums and the colour red at this time of year. On Thursday we followed a recipe to make rice and ate it in small bowls with chopsticks. Everyone had seconds and wanted more! We learned that kites need a windy day to fly. We Flew two kites on Thursday. It was cold but we had a lot of fun! We pretended that we were kites, flying all around the playground! 'WEEEEEEEE!'We also looked at posters and discovered that Chinese People think that peaches are special fruit and that coy carp are special fish. We noticed that some Chinese people wear different clothing to ours. We all chose one thing that we liked about our week to write about. We had a fantastically interesting week. Gung hey fat choy!

The children found a worm. They put it back onto the grass carefully. Worms sometimes come out for a crawl on wet days.

I have made my POPPY pretty by sewing around the outside with a string. We have learned why we have POPPIES on REMEMBRANCE DAY. Do you know why?

We are pleased to have Molly-May join RS this week. Many of the children have been playing with her today.

We are learning about Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night. We will try to be safe and sensible on Bonfire Night. We are pretending to be sparklers. Pom Poms are really fun to shake about! Happy Bonfire Night!

We have an Optician Shop in our Home Corner to 'buy' glasses with our pennies. The Optician will use an eye chart to test our eyes. we like wearing glasses.

This week we are learning about our eyes. We see with our eyes. We are learning about the job that the Optician does to help us. Some people wear glasses to see better.
